What Performance Improvement Means to PinPoint Performance Solutions

The International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) is the leading international organization dedicated to improving performance and productivity in the workplace.  Rather than give you their definition of performance improvement (referred to as Human Performance Improvement at ISPI), I thought I would give you PinPoint Performance Solutions’ definition as we choose to see it and how we choose to apply its principles.

I certainly don’t claim that PinPoint’s definition of performance improvement is better than ISPI’s.  What I have found over the years is professionals in this field have different views of performance improvement, but the fundamentals that serve as the basis of their views are similar and usually stem from ISPI’s HPT Model.

There are four key fundamentals to performance improvement.

  1. Performance improvement takes a systematic view of an organization – the people, processes and the environment where work takes place.
  2. Performance improvement is heavy on analysis, identifying needs and the causes to performance problems in the workplace.
  3. Performance improvement is focused on outcomes. It’s dependent on the findings from a form of analysis known as a gap analysis, looking at the current state of performance and the desired, optimal state of performance.
  4. Performance improvement applies evaluation throughout consistently measuring the effectiveness of interventions and solutions applied to solve performance problems.

The overall approach to PinPoint Performance Solutions’ services (training, user-centered design and usability testing) begin with our Workplace Performance Improvement service inspired by ISPI’s HPT Model.  When a client approaches us with a business problem, we begin working with them in the context of performance improvement.
