The Best Advice for Training Developers

Within the last couple months, recent events in the world around me prompted me to think about the state of the training profession and how it can survive in a recession. It seems whenever times are tough, training is thought of as a luxury or “nice to have” to the people who watch the bottom line.  It is either cut entirely or scaled back significantly.

I wondered what I would say to a person just starting out in this profession if they asked me, “What is the best advice you can give to a new training professional?”  Regardless if the economy is good or bad I think every training professional, in everything they do, needs to demonstrate to stakeholders two things:

  1. You save the company (or your client) money through training
  2. You help the company (or client) make money, directly or indirectly

Sometimes it is a stretch to come up with hard numbers that proves you are either saving money or making money for the company. Either way, demonstrate value and always let it be know to those who matter you are an asset and not a liability.

At PinPoint Performance Solutions, our working objective to our clients is to sustain profitability by either helping them to save money or make money though the training and performance support initiatives we develop.  In 2010 we look forward to the many opportunities that await us where we can demonstrate our overall value.
